QuestionsRoomTalk Frequently Asked Questions
Short, plain answers to the things people ask most about the RoomTalk caption app.
What is RoomTalk?
RoomTalk is a phone app for deaf and hard-of-hearing people that turns the speech around you into large, easy-to-read captions. You slide one switch to start, and the last thing said stays on screen so you have time to read it.
Does RoomTalk work offline?
Yes. RoomTalk does all speech recognition on the device using bundled models. It works with no wifi and no signal even in airplane mode and nothing is ever uploaded.
Where do my conversations go?
Everything stays on your phone. There are no servers, no accounts, and no analytics or tracking. Saved conversations live only on your device and can be deleted any time with one tap.
Who is RoomTalk for?
It is built first for deaf and hard-of-hearing people, and especially for older users who find phones hard to use. Every choice favors them: very large text, strong contrast, and a single obvious control.
Is RoomTalk an app to talk to a deaf person?
Yes. RoomTalk is the simplest app to talk to a deaf person: you speak and your words appear as large, easy-to-read captions, so a hearing person and a deaf person can have a normal conversation. As a big text app, the words are easy to read across the table.
Can a deaf or non-speaking person take part without speaking?
Yes. RoomTalk shows the whole conversation in big text so a deaf or non-speaking person can follow every word and stay involved. Many people use it as a talk without speaking app for everyday chats at home, at the counter, or at the doctor.
Does RoomTalk filter bad language?
Yes. RoomTalk automatically softens strong language, keeping the first and last letter and masking the rest, so a swear word reads as S**T instead of the full word. It keeps captions comfortable to read in front of family.
How accurate are the captions?
RoomTalk is built on a high-accuracy English dictionary and gets more than 95% of everyday speech right. It also capitalizes modern names like ChatGPT, OpenAI, and NVIDIA correctly.
How much does it cost?
RoomTalk is a one-time $4.99. It is available now on Android and coming to the Apple App Store soon. There are no subscriptions, no ads, and no account to create.
Can I read back an earlier conversation?
Yes. Each time you switch listening off, that conversation is saved. You can browse saved conversations by date Today, Yesterday, or any day and re-read every line with its timestamp.
